Voices
The voices are taken from long conversations with different persons I know. The recording usually lasts for more than one hour. Afterwards the material is transcribed to a script where I can highlight and cut out the pieces I want to use.
It’s important to me that the voices are recorded from a genuine conversation, because it gives me an authenticity I’ve not been able to get any other way. It’s not however equally important to present a true image of neither the conversation nor the persons who are recorded. I want the song to be inspired by the conversation, rather than portraying it.
I met the chinese girl singing in “Let the right one sleep” on a recording trip in China. I asked her if she could sing some typical chinese songs. Back in Sweden I analyzed the pitches and found places in the harmonic structure where the phrases could be inserted.
